L.ATR 575 - Advanced Care of Athletic Illness & Injury

This course is designed to give students advanced skills necessary to provide healthcare to an active and athletic population. Key topics will focus on advanced emergency care, injury prevention, and administrative tasks associated with the provision of healthcare. Advanced emergency care will include caring for cardiac compromise including but not limited to supplemental oxygen, suction, adjunct airways and administration of low dose aspirin and nitroglycerin. Instruction on caring for respiratory compromise including but not limited to assessment of vital signs, the use of pulse oximetry, spirometry, metered-dose inhalers, nebulizers and bronchodilators. Treatment of internal and external hemorrhage, and wounds including but not limited to the use of sutures and staples. Management of shock and anaphylaxis including the administration of epinephrine via an auto-injector, and the use of IV fluids. Treatment and management of metabolic conditions (diabetes) including the use of a glucometer, glucagon, and insulin. Treatment and management of injuries and illnesses related to the abdominopelvic region. Treatment of drug overdose including the administration of naloxone. Treatment of additional musculoskeletal injury including testicular injury.
