L.RST 303 - Pilgrims in Their Own Land Credits: 3
Theologian James Cone describes the migration of African Americans north between the First and Second World Wars as “a religious people making their journey toward the promised land.” The same can be said of Eastern European Jews who arrived in the United States in vast numbers at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. This course examines they ways both of these groups used their religious beliefs and practices to help them understand the purpose of their travels, the need to fashion communities in the face of tremendous adversity, and finally how they would respond as “Americans” to both. Prerequisite: None Co-requisite: None General Education Classification: Not Applicable
