The music program offers two major degree programs: (1) Bachelor of Arts degree in Musical Studies; (2) Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education . The music program also offers a minor in Liturgical Music , in cooperation with the religious studies department.
Student Learning Outcomes - Musical Studies
- Students will demonstrate the technical and artistic skills necessary for independent musical expression in a major performance area.
- Students will perform both collaboratively and effectively through participation in musical ensembles.
- Students will apply musical theoretical concepts to analyze harmonic and formal structures and create musical examples using appropriate tools.
- Students will understand music in historical and cultural contexts.
- Students will demonstrate keyboard competency.
- Students will demonstrate conducting and rehearsal skills.
- Students involved in music education will apply appropriate teaching skills to classroom scenarios
- Students will communicate musical ideas in both written and oral contexts.

General Education Requirements
Requirements for the Major in Musical Studies (B.A.):
The major in Music Studies consists of ten 3-credit courses (or a combination of courses and 3-credit equivalencies if in ensembles or applied lessons) plus a 1-credit senior project/recital. (31 total credits) Students are expected to complete a culminating experience that reflects their particular musical focus, within the music program. The project must be approved by program faculty before the beginning of the senior year.
Music Theory
Two courses (6 credits) in music theory (must include Music Theory I)
Music History
Three courses (9 credits) in Music History and Culture (Must include Music History I)
Music Making
Five courses (15 credits) or equivalencies in Music Making (Two or more three credit courses required with the remainder being fulfilled by ensemble participation or private study) Students may choose to take 2 techniques courses as partial fulfillment of this required area.
Senior Project (1 Credit)
- Voice or Instrumental Recital (45-60)
- Composition Project: Oral presentation and performance by approved soloist or ensemble
- Research Project approved by music program faculty
