L.ENG 210 - Literary Studies Credits: 3
In this course students will be stimulated to think about the purpose and value of studying literature, and introduced to the interpretive reading skills and critical vocabulary of basic textual analysis (i.e. close reading, and structural and formalist analysis). Students will learn to write about the elements of literature, including plot, character, setting, ideas, point of view, imagery, metaphor, symbolism, allegory, and prosody. The course also introduces students to contextual analysis. It emphasizes practical instruction in writing critical essays, and is writing-intensive. Newly declared English majors should take this course the first semester it is offered after they declare, if they have not taken it already.
