The main purpose of this course is to understand the basic underpinnings of chemistry in the living world. Toward this goal, we will study the four basic biochemical building blocks of nucleotides, amino acids, carbohydrates, and fatty acids scaffolding towards increased complexity. We will explore the composition, structure, and energetics of biological macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins/enzymes, and cell membranes/walls as well as the flow control of metabolic pathways. Prerequisite: L.CHE 112 or L.CHE 245 ; L.CHE 234 and L.BIO 115 Co-requisite: None General Education Classification: Not Applicable
